HOW TO LOSE
LOVE HANDLES?
It is an accepted fact that love handles growth is
mostly due to genetics. This is how men tend to get love handles more
often than women do because genetically that is where men put the fat
in storage. For women, it is the thighs, hips, buttocks and the like.
It is not fully known why this is so and though there have been
thousands of studies on this aspect the actual reason still remains a
mystery.
The fact is that despite the cute name, the love
handles are not something you like to see or have. The good part is
that unlike the other fat – for example that which accumulates on
your abdomen – this fat is not dangerous to health. In
fact, and astonishingly so, there are studies which imply that this fat
is actually good for your health. Abdominal fat has more often
than not been implicated in the triggering of heart problems and
diabetes hence it is labeled as high risk fat.
You Cannot
Target Fat Reduction
A fact that is very little believed and understood
is that fat cannot be spot reduced. This is a mass of cells that are
interconnected and covers all the fat of the body. So, it is not
correct to assume that if you do sit-ups the fat around the stomach
would reduce, nor it is possible to loose thigh fat just by doing leg
exercises.
Fat cells, which are also known as adipocytes
belong to the whole body and in order to get rid of any 'colony' you
would have to get rid of the whole thing. Did you know that there
are about 30-35 billion of such cells in your body with normal
health? The numbers of these cells reach a saturation point as
you enter into your adulthood. These cells multiply during childhood
rapidly, a process that slows down during puberty and completely stops
as you cross into adulthood.
So, how do you grow fat if these cells do not
multiply any longer, you would ask? What actually happens is that
each adipocyte cell has the capacity of expanding by absorbing excess
fat. As it reaches its upper maximum point, it sends an SOS signal to
the neighboring pre-adipocyte cells which are baby adipocyte cells in
simple lay person language, to help them and these in turn start
absorbing the excess fat. As the pre-adipocyte cells grow and grow with
the fat they absorb they evolve and become adult adipocyte cells.


In this manner each of the adipocyte cells
has the capacity to inflate itself into a large mass of fat. As
the cells inflate themselves, the person they belong to grows fat. The
pre-adipocytes are special cells that would not get activated into
functioning until there is extra fat in the mature adipocyte cell next
to it. How and why these cells remain 'adolescent' while the
others develop into mature adipocyte cell it is not very well
documented or explained by modern science.
Another point of interest is that adipocytes never
disappear from the body even when you reach that perfect zero fat body.
They shrink to the minimum possible size and then lie dormant until
there is some fat around to absorb. There is no way to get rid of these
bags of adipocyte cells other than liposuction.
How Do You
Loose That Fat
You would observe that for some people exercising
means they tart loosing weight from a particular part of their body
– say, they start with loosing the fat on their face, or hips, or
buttocks. This is not a controlled process; rather it means that the
adipocytes in that region are more sensitive to the signal from the
hormone that you are releasing with the help of the exercises you are
doing.
It is definitely not possible to 'order' or
'influence' any particular adipocytes to release fat, though this would
be so nice. So, when you exercise all adipocytes release fat
– while some release it first, some release it slower. When the
adipocytes release fat, it has to be consumed or burnt out completely
or it would return to the adipocyte.
One of the best ways to loose weight and maintain
it is to build muscles. Muscles build up requires a lot of calories
which in turn trigger the burn out of fat stored in the body. For this
purpose, weight lifting seems to be an excellent way to loose and
manage body weight. You need to understand here that muscle mass weighs
more than fat. So, many times when building your muscles, you will
observe that you are becoming thinner but your weight remains the same
and sometimes even increases. This is because you are exchanging muscle
mass with fat mass.

We have covered and understood that exercises are
a must if you want to loose fat. This is because fat is the energy
storage of the body and the energy would be released only when the
demand for it rises in the body as the exercises do. However,
unless the diet is regulated, whatever you burn during exercises would
be put back through the food intake and your efforts would all be lost.
How Soon
You Can See Results
The minimum you would need is about one month
since the average weight loss with the right diet and exercise would
normally be about 1-2 pounds. Of course, there are many factors
that go into the accurate calculations of how much fat you are likely
to loose, such as your age, genetics, type of exercises, how much time
you give the exercise, gender, what is the time for the fat to
accumulate, where is the fat accumulated, and so on.
It is good thing to know that the adipocytes in
the hips, thighs and buttocks seem a little stubborn in releasing the
fat that they store. The ones around the abdomen are easier to
coax into releasing fat. Therefore, you would observe that you tend to
loose fat faster around your middle than in the hips or thigh region.
